A Bite of British Tradition: “Bangers and Mash” in the Canteen

Nick Wadley is the maintenance manager at Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V.’s UK branch in Hatfield. Nick’s lunch pattern is the same almost every day: he eats in the office canteen with the facilities team. His meal today was a stomach-satisfying choice. “This is a traditional British dish called ‘bangers and mash’”, says Nick. “It consists of Cumberland sausages (bangers) and creamy mashed potato (mash) topped with a rich gravy”. Made from chopped pork and seasoning, Cumberland sausage is one of the most commonly used “bangers” in this traditional dish.

By the way, why are sausages called “bangers” in the UK? According to one of the most plausible accounts, the nickname’s origin dates back to the World War I era when the country faced serious food shortages. Meat was no exception and sausage manufacturers had no choice but to add some extra ingredients, including water, to their products. Yes, water. Now, you can guess what would happen when they were cooked over a high heat—“BANG!” That’s why, it is widely believed, sausages are dubbed “bangers” in the UK.

Nick’s verdict on his lunch? “It was tasty and filling, as it contained a lot of carbs”.
